Last stop - North Miami, FL...

Day 11: Friday, June 16, 2006... After a great clinic in Columbia, SC, we hopped on the bus for the 10-hour bus drive to N. Miami, FL and arrived at our hotel at 8:00 a.m. Even at the early hour, it was already shaping up to be a very warm day. Usually after an all night bus ride we have a day off, but not today. We had a few hours at the hotel before getting ready for the last clinic in N. Miami.

Resurrection Drums in Hallandale, FL hosted today's clinic. Jeff Lee, owner of Resurrection Drums has hosted many Zildjian sponsored clinics and is a total pro. The staff from Resurrection Drums set up a separate area for the Meet & Greet and did a great job promoting the event. We knew tonight's clinic would be the perfect grand finale to "Mission From Gadd 3". The Sales Event and Meet & Greet were held at the venue, and when we arrived at 2:30 PM for the Sales Event and to load-in Steve's drums, there was already a large crowd waiting to check out the Sound Lab Prototypes and other Zildjian models. Fortunately, the venue had a lobby where people could wait, so they didn't have to endure the heat, which had now reached the mid 90s. By the time the Sales Event began at 3:00 PM, the crowd had grown even larger and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Steve Gadd for the Meet & Greet.

Steve arrived at 4:30 PM and was greeted by a huge and very enthusiastic crowd of nearly 300 people! He graciously signed autographs and posed for photos for over 90 minutes, making sure that everyone had a chance to meet him and get an autograph. This put us slightly behind schedule, but well worth it in order to accommodate his fans and the many Zildjian supporters.

The all day event was held at the North Miami Beach Performing Arts Center; a beautiful venue with great acoustics in the auditorium. The clinic began at 7:15 PM with Steve receiving another standing ovation from the audience of over 400. Tonight's clinic went longer than usual due to many questions from the audience, and many people wanting to express their appreciation for Steve coming to South Florida and his contribution to music throughout his career. In addition to taking many questions from the audience, he demonstrated signature grooves including: "50 Ways", "Late In The Evening" and "Mozambique". The energy in the room was palpable and it was a fitting conclusion to our two-week, eleven-city tour of Canada and the US East Coast.

Steve said, "I want to thank all the music store owners for inviting me and everyone for coming to the clinics. I also want to thank all the teachers for all they do to support drumming and music. If it wasn't for them, people wouldn't know who I am. We're all in this together."

John DeChristopher, Zildjian's Vice President, Artist Relations & Event Marketing Worldwide commented, "Our thanks go out to all the dealers for all their hard work and efforts in making "Mission From Gadd 3" the huge success it was, and to all of Steve's fans for making us feel welcome everywhere we visited. Like the previous two "Mission From Gadd" tours, we wanted to provide the ultimate experience for both music dealers and Zildjian customers alike. For our dealers, it was an opportunity to host an event that gave them access to one of a kind Zildjian "Sound Lab Prototype" cymbals, culminating with a rare clinic by arguably the most influential and important drummer in the world. For Zildjian's customers, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to "hang" with Steve Gadd: a true musical icon. Once again, Mission Accomplished."

Heating it up in Columbia, SC...

Day 10: Thursday, June 15, 2006... Our drive from Richmond to Columbia, SC had some interesting moments, since it involved remnants of Hurricane Alberto and passing through a tornado zone. Once again, kudos to our driver, Jeremy, for getting us to Columbia safely and in great time - about 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14th.

We had a relaxing day off on Wednesday and our hotel was literally a block from the State Capitol and walking distance to some great restaurants! We settled on an excellent steak and seafood restaurant for dinner, which was a nice change from eating on the bus. The weather cleared Wednesday afternoon and today was a typical June day in Columbia, SC: sunny, 95 degrees. Everyone we met in Columbia was warm and friendly and made us feel very welcome. Allen Kaylor, Zildjian's Regional Sales Manager, joined the rest of the Zildjian crew for the remaining two dates of the tour. Welcome aboard Allen!

Sims Music hosted today's clinic. The afternoon Sales Event and Meet & Greet was held at the venue and we had a great turnout. Once again, the Sound Lab Prototypes were a big hit with everyone there. Steve arrived for the Meet & Greet at 4:30 PM and signed autographs and posed for photos for over an hour for the hundreds of eager fans who came out to see him. Many fans told us they have driven several hours to be there. Steve was very appreciative of their support. The entire staff at Sims Music did an outstanding job putting everything together. TheyyyyyyÃ?re a wonderful group of people, and if you live in the area, you owe it to yourself to check out their store.

The clinic was held in Columbia's historic Township Auditorium, a 75 year-old landmark overflowing with character. Everyone from Elvis Presley to Pink Floyd has played there. And now they can add Steve Gadd to the list! The room had beautiful acoustics and required almost no mic'ing of Steve's kit. The stage manager told us it was built in 1930 and is still one of the most popular venues in the area. Needless to say, the sound check went very smoothly.

Once again Steve received a standing ovation upon his introduction, and proceeded to put on an exciting and very educational clinic. He took time to demonstrate his classic "Mozambique" groove, breaking it down slowly so everyone could understand the sticking. He then proceeded to slowly demonstrate the sticking for Paul Simon's "Late In The Evening" pointing out the similarities between it and "Mozambique". Then he played the "Late In The Evening" groove at the regular tempo and the audience went wild! He also took time to demonstrate his famous linear sticking between the snare and the hi-hat. Another great clinic with insightful questions from drummers of all ages and styles.

Steve said, "I felt great tonight and enjoyed meeting all the teachers and so many nice people in Columbia. I hope to come back again soon."

On to our last stop! North Miami, FL... That is, after a 10-hour drive from Columbia, SC...

Richmond, VA

Day 9: Tuesday, June 13, 2006... We made great time from Philadelphia and arrived at our hotel in Richmond at 1:00 a.m., and were looking forward to our first day off in a week. What does Steve Gadd and the Zildjian crew on their day off? Laundry, of course!

Jim McGathey, Artist Relations Manager - East Coast, arrived today for the remainder of the tour. Welcome aboard Jim! After our much needed day off, we were ready to go. Richmond Music hosted today's clinic and the Sales Event and Meet & Greet were held at their new location, which opened in early June. Kip Williams and his partner Chris Stanley have a beautiful store, with an excellent teaching program. Kip told Zildjian's John DeChristopher they have 700 students per week coming in for various lessons.

There were lots of people checking out the Zildjian Sound Lab Prototypes. Steve arrived for the Meet & Greet at 4:00 PM and there was a nice crowd waiting to meet him. He signed autographs and posed for photos with fans for over an hour before heading off to the venue for sound check. The clinic was held at Midlothian High School in their auditorium, and again it was a beautiful sounding room.

Upon his introduction to the crowd, Steve received a standing ovation by the audience of 400 fans. He then proceeded to treat them to an incredible evening, demonstrating many of his classic grooves and taking questions from the audience. Once again, Steve's sense of humor and humility came shining through when a fan complimented his solo on Steely Dan's "Aja", and Steve replied, "I had an attack of talent." The audience erupted into laughter! There were many other great questions and Steve's down to earth approach made the audience appreciate him even more. It was a great night and a very warm and gracious audience. Many people came up afterward and thanked us for bringing "Mission From Gadd 3" to Richmond.

Next stop, Columbia, SC and Wednesday, June 14th is another day off...We're looking forward to the next clinic in Columbia, SC on Thursday, June 15th...

Showing Some "Independence" In Philadelphia, PA...

Day 8: Sunday, June 11, 2006... After the early clinic in Harrisburg, we had a relatively short (two hour) drive to Philadelphia, so we arrived at our hotel at 8:00 PM on Saturday night. Our routine is to eat dinner on the bus after the clinic as we drive to the next city, which allows us to save a lot of time. It felt great to get into our hotel so early. Although we weren't in Philly very long, we got a feel for the city and its history.

Sam Ash Music hosted today's clinic and the Sales Event was held at Sam Ash's King of Prussia location. Al Vetere, Steve Blacker and the entire Sam Ash staff were very accommodating, and Zildjian's Sales Team of Bob LaClair, Al Moffatt and Al Marinaro handled the Sales Event. The Meet & Greet was scheduled for 2-3 PM at the store, but due to a massive traffic jam on the interstate, we decided to hold the Meet & Greet after the clinic. We realized we would never be able to get Steve to the store for the Meet & Greet, then to the venue for sound check, if we stayed there until 3:00 PM. Once again, the importance of knowing when to improvise! Since the clinic began at 5:00 PM, we made time afterward for a Meet & Greet. Steve didnnnnnnÃ?t want anyone going home being disappointed.

The clinic was held at Philadelphia's historic Trocadero Theater, a great old building with a nice live sound. One of the nice things about this tour is all of the clinics are held at outside venues, (such as the Trocadero Theater), or at College or High School auditoriums, so the sound is always great on stage and in the house. Having professional guys running the sound (which has been the case at all the stops) also plays an important part in the production. It basically allows us to get the sound check done in 20-30 minutes. The audience had a lot of energy and Steve fed off of it. His playing is always great, but it was apparent that he was really enjoying himself today. And again, some excellent questions from the audience, which allowed him to integrate more playing and demonstrating, and helped the entire clinic flow smoothly.

After the clinic, Steve was more than happy to sign autographs and pose for photos with fans for over an hour before we headed out for the five-hour drive to Richmond, VA. Monday is a day off and since this was the eighth clinic in ten days and sixth clinic in a row, everyone is looking forward to a free day.

Adam Cocio, Zildjian's Customer Service Manager, leaves the tour after today, so our thanks to Adam for all his hard work over the past four days.

Steve said: "I'm having a great time out here and appreciate everyone coming out to see me. Thanks to all the stores and teachers for all they do to support drumming."

Harrisburg, PA

Day 7: Saturday, June 10, 2006...The drive from Manhattan to our next stop, Harrisburg, PA, was a little over three hours with the rain and a fuel refill, so we arrived at our hotel at 1:30 AM, which is early compared to other stops. However, Saturday's lobby call was earlier, so no sleeping in today!

Today's clinic was hosted by Dale's Drum Shop, and part of the annual Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz weekend. Steve's clinic was slotted into Saturday's schedule of events, which also included performances by Zildjian artists: Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors), who was performing with a jazz trio, Marko Marcinko and John Riley, performing with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. The event was being held at the hotel we were staying at, so it made the load-in and set-up of Steve's drums very convenient.

The Sales Event and Meet & Greet were held at Dale's Drum Shop, and the Zildjian staff, John King, Bob LaClair, Adam Cocio and local rep, Al Moffatt arrived at 12:00 PM to start the Sales Event. There was a huge line of people in the parking lot when Steve and John DeChristopher arrived at 2:00 PM for the Meet & Greet and Dale, his wife Gale, Rej and the rest of the staff at Dale's did a great job of keeping the autograph line moving, allowing us to stay on our very tight schedule. Today's clinic was scheduled from 4:00-5:30 PM due to another event immediately following Steve. Thanks to our local Sales Rep Al Moffatt, we made great time back to the venue after the Meet & Greet for the sound check.

The clinic began just after 4:00 PM and Steve put on an amazing clinic for the crowd of over 400 people. As usual, there were lots of great questions from the audience and Steve took time to demonstrate various sticking patterns and grooves. Since the clinic was part of a larger event and held on a Saturday, there were many younger players and families in the audience.

Thanks to everyone at Dale's Drum Shop and Dave Lazorcek, who runs the Central Pennsylvanian Friends of Jazz event for doing such a great job of organizing the clinic. We had a ball!

On to the city of brotherly love...

Gadd is still "King of the Hill" in NYC!

Day 6: Friday, June 9, 2006...After an incredible clinic with Long Island Drum Center, we were looking forward to New York City for the clinic at the Manhattan School of Music and thankful for only a 90-minute drive from Long Island. We arrived at our hotel in midtown Manhattan around 12:00 A.M. and have to give kudos to Jeremy, our bus driver, for doing such a great job maneuvering the bus through Times Square. Even at the late hour, the Big Apple was bustling with activity!

Today's clinic was hosted by Sam Ash Music on 48th Street, a permanent fixture in New York City since the 1920s, and was held at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music. The day began fairly early for the Zildjian crew, since we needed to bring SteveeeeeeÃ?s drums to the Manhattan School of Music, which meant driving from midtown Manhattan up to West 122nd St - almost 80 blocks. We arrived at the Manhattan School, loaded in and set up Steve's drums, then jumped on the bus back down to 48th Street for the Sales Event.

When we arrived at the store, there was already a nice crowd of people trying the various Sound Lab Prototypes and of course waiting for the "Meet & Greet" with Steve, scheduled for 4:00 P.M. Al Vetere and all the guys at Sam Ash really had things organized at the store for the Meet & Greet, including a Security team to make sure everything was under control. We needed to get back up the Manhattan School for sound check and the clinic and had to travel 75 blocks in rush hour traffic, so we needed to keep to a very tight schedule. Steve arrived at 4:00 P.M. and the Meet & Greet went like clockwork. We were on the bus headed for 122nd Street at 5:00 P.M., this time joined by Paul Siegel of Hudson Music and a camera crew to interview Steve for an upcoming DVD. We had a lot of laughs as we made our way up town.

The sound check went smoothly and Hudson Music was there to videotape the clinic for the DVD, so we had to make a few modifications to the stage set up. Justin DiCioccio, Mark Micklethwaite and everyone from the Manhattan School of Music were incredibly accommodating. Needless to say, New York City is overflowing with great musicians, many of them being Zildjian artists and tonight we were honored by the presence of Steve Smith and his wife Diane, Matt Wilson, Ray Marchica and Otis Brown.

The clinic had a great flow, with Steve really "stretching" during the section of the clinic where he interacts with the audience as they clap a Clave pattern. There were some great questions from the audience, with Steve doing a great job explaining various sticking patterns and his classic fills from Steely Dan's "Aja". A woman from the audience asked Steve how he would play a 3/4 waltz, and she proceeded to sing along to his impeccable groove - only in New York! All in all, another great night.

On to Harrisburg, PA...

Rockin' the house in Long Island

Day 5: Thursday, June 8, 2006...The fifth stop on Mission From Gadd 3 was the highly anticipated clinic hosted by the Long Island Drum Center in Plainview, NY.

We arrived at our hotel in Plainview, NY at 4:30 A.M. after our drive from Portland, ME, and were able to get some sleep before starting our day. Adam Cocio, Customer Service Manager at Zildjian, joined the tour for a few day... Welcome Adam!

LIDC is one of the oldest and most respected drum shops in the country and in fact, 2006 marks their 30-year anniversary. What better way to celebrate such a great milestone, than to have Steve Gadd for a clinic! As Dennis Ricci, owner of LIDC pointed out, they've been trying to get Steve to do a clinic for almost all of the 30 years they've been in business. The Zildjian Team arrived at LIDC at 2:00 P.M. for the Sales Event and there was already a large crowd eagerly waiting for the "Meet & Greet". LIDC was offering a special deal on all Zildjian cymbals (not just the Sound Lab Prototypes) so there were many cymbals purchased throughout course of the day. Today was more challenging than any other to date, due to the venue being 30 minutes from the store and that we couldn't drive the bus there due to so many low hanging trees and electrical wires. John D and some of guys from LIDC brought Steve's drum over in a van and after a quick set-up, managed to stay on the tight schedule. Sometimes you've got to improvise!

The Meet & Greet was held at LIDC and Steve arrived at 3:45 P.M. and the store was absolutely packed! The fans were great and patiently waited to meet Steve to have various items signed and pose for photos. Towards the end of the Meet & Greet, none other than drumming great Omar Hakim walked in the door! Omar said: "I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see one of my all time drum heroes." Very kind words from one the greats! Omar later joined Steve and the Zildjian guys on the bus for a nice visit before we headed to the venue for sound check.

The clinic was held at W.T. Clark High School Auditorium in Westbury, NY to a sold out audience of 1,100 people! Dennis Ricci and his staff are true professionals and have many years of experience hosting clinics, and it was obvious tonight. After a heartfelt introduction by Dennis' brother and co-founder of LIDC, Jerry Ricci, Steve came out on stage to a standing ovation. Tonight's clinic "clicked" from the moment Steve put his sticks to the drums and he demonstrated some incredible grooves and took some great questions from the audience, and once again, many younger players were in the audience. When someone asked Steve what he's thinking about on certain types of sessions, he gave his humorous anecdote: "I try not to think too much, because getting into my head is like going into a bad neighborhood. And you should never go in there alone." Of course the audience ate it up!

Steve commented: "Tonight felt like a bunch of drummers hanging...Dennis and everyone at LIDC are great bunch of guys."

Photo above: John King, Steve Gadd, Omar Hakim and John DeChristopher on the tour bus.

Portland, ME

Day 4: Wednesday, June 7, 2006...The relatively short drive from Boston to Portland, Maine was a refreshing change and we were able to check into the hotel just after midnight. Portland is a beautiful city and we were down town by the water, with lots of great little shops and restaurants nearby. Unfortunately, the rainy weather prevented us from going on a morning run or any sightseeing, and the walk to the local Starbucks required an umbrella from the hotel. But, that was just a minor inconvenience.

The Drum Shop of Portland was our host today, with the event held at the South Portland High School Auditorium. It was a beautiful hall and the sound was spectacular. We knew today was going to go smoothly. The Zildjian staff consisted of John DeChristopher, John King, Paul Francis, Bob LaClair and Mike Gross, arriving at 2:00 PM and was ready to roll (pun intended!).

Chris, Shane and John from The Drum Shop are terrific guys and have held many Zildjian sponsored events in the past. Fortunately, people in New England aren't afraid of a little rain and the afternoon Sales Event drew a nice crowd, as did Steve's "Meet & Greet".

The clinic began shortly after 7:00 PM, with getting a standing ovation as he walked out on stage after his introduction. From that moment on, you could feel the tremendous energy in the room. Steve played for a while then opened it to the audience for questions. Tonight, the first question was about his famous beat on Paul Simon's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover". He proceeded to demonstrate how the beat originated from a marching pattern and talked about his years playing in Drum & Bugle Corps.

He received some excellent questions from the audience, with many of them coming from young players. A young boy of about 10 years old asked Steve "If it's fun playing with Eric Clapton?", to which Steve simply replied, "Yes" which brought a huge laugh from the audience. Steve then went on to say: "It's not an accident that Eric Clapton is as famous as he is. He's a great musician, and I really enjoy working with him." Steve also commented on how much appreciated all the teachers and the great job they do and said: "If it wasn't for you guys, people wouldn't know who I am."

Good To Be In Boston!

Day 3: Tuesday, June 6, 2006... After arriving in Boston at 4:00 a.m. Monday morning from Montreal, we enjoyed a restful day off on Monday while Steve flew to New York to play a benefit with Paul Simon.

A Drums of Boston, located on Boylston Street in downtown Boston, literally steps from Berklee College of Music, and a short walk from Fenway Park, hosted today's clinic. Sean Kennedy is the new owner of A Drums and he and his wife Kristen, and Matt and Pat at A Drums, did a great job organizing the event and took great care of us.

The Zildjian Team arrived for the Sales Event at 2:00 PM and there was already nice crowd forming for Steve's "Meet & Greet" and to check out the Sound Lab Prototypes. The Zildjian Team included: John DeChristopher-VP, Artist Relations & Event Marketing Worldwide, John King-Product Training Manager, Paul Francis-Research and Design/Quality Manager, Bob LaClair-Regional Sales Manager and Mike Gross-Sales Rep. The "Meet & Greet" went smoothly and Steve's eager fans (many of whom were Berklee students) waited patiently to meet the legend. From there, it was a short walk to the Berklee Performance Center for sound check.

Due to A Drums' close proximity to the Zildjian Factory, key Zildjian executives came to see Steve, including: Craigie Zildjian, CEO, Brad Baker, Chief Marketing Officer and Jerry Donegan, Vice President of Sales, as well as many Zildjian factory and office workers.

The clinic was held at the Berklee Performance Center, where three years ago, Zildjian held its second American Drummers Achievement Awards event, honoring Steve and endowing a scholarship in Steve's name. Steve also received an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music in September of 2005. The venue is very comfortable, and the room has a nice live sound. Steve prefers a live room so he doesn't have to rely on sound reinforcement to get a "natural" sound from his drums. Today's sound check went very smoothly, as they usually do.

The clinic started at 7:15 PM to allow everyone to get seated and there were many Berklee teachers in the house, as well as Berklee President, Roger Brown. The intimate crowd was treated to an incredible evening with Steve demonstrating many of his patented grooves and taking some excellent questions from the audience. He also interjected some of his classic "Gadd humor" and had the audience in stitches on several occasions. All in all a great night!

Steve commented: "Sean and his guys have a nice place for drummers to hang, and that's what it's all about. I enjoyed meeting all the nice people at A Drums - Boston is a great city..."

Montreal!

Day 2: Sunday, June 4, 2006... We arrived in downtown Montreal at 3:00 a.m. and were amazed to see so much activity still going on in the local clubs. What a great city!

After a little more sleep at the hotel and Steve getting a nice run down by the canal, the Zildjian Team headed over to Montreal's historic Corona Theater for the afternoon Sales Event. Steve's Music hosted todays event, and Lenny and all the guys at Steve's did a great job organizing the event. Once again the "Sound Lab Prototypes" and the K Custom Hybrids were a huge hit with everyone there for the Sales Event, with many of the models selling out instantly.

Steve arrived for the Meet & Greet at 4:00 p.m. and there was a huge line of patient fans eagerly waiting their turn to meet the legend. The anticipation from the fans and crew set the tone for what would be an even greater evening.

The clinic started just after 7:00 p.m., but not before Lenny from Steve's Music told a funny anecdote about his own personal experience as a Steve Gadd fan, then bringing John DeChristopher up to introduce Steve and start the show.

And it only got better from there! The energy of nearly 800 fans in the room made for an incredible evening with Steve demonstrating many of his signature grooves and fielding some excellent questions from the audience.

After the clinic, Ralph Angelillo of Canada's "Drums Etc. Magazine and organizer of Montreal Drum Fest, and local artists Denis Courchesne and Jean Nadeau, joined Steve and the Zildjian Team on the bus for a quick hang before getting on the road for the six-hour drive to Boston.

Monday is a day off for the Zildjian Team (in our home town of Boston no less!), but Steve has to catch a 7:30 a.m. flight to New York for a benefit with Paul Simon on Monday, before flying back to Boston on Tuesday, June 6th to resume the tour at the Berklee Performance Center hosted by A Drums.

Commented John DeChristopher-VP, Artist Relations & Event Marketing Worldwide, "It was great that we could bring Steve to Toronto and Montreal, and the first two clinics could not have been any better. Our sincere thanks to everyone at Long & McQuade and Steve's for all their hard work and to all our friends in Canada for making us feel so welcome..."

First Stop... Toronto, Canada!

Day 1: Saturday, June 3rd, 2006... Zildjian kicked off its highly anticipated "Mission From Gadd 3" Steve Gadd clinic tour in Toronto, Canada to a sold out and very enthusiastic audience, hosted by Long & McQuade Music. Zildjian distributor, B&J Music, was also instrumental in helping organize the event.

The rainy weather didn't deter hundreds of Steve Gadd fans from coming to Humber College for the Zildjian Sales Event and Steve Gadd Meet & Greet, and of course the main event, Steve Gadd in clinic. On display were Zildjian "Sound Lab Prototypes" and specially selected models from the Zildjian Vault including the new K Custom Hybrid Line.

Steve arrived at 4:00 p.m. for the "Meet & Greet" and was happy to sign autographs and pose for photos with the hundreds of fans who came to see him. The clinic began just after 6:00 p.m. and the Toronto audience gave Steve a very warm welcome. Steve got into the groove the moment he walked on stage to a standing ovation. He treated the audience to an incredible evening and the audience in turn was incredibly gracious.

Afterward, we got back on the bus for the six-hour drive to Montreal. All in all, the first stop of "Mission From Gadd 3" could not have been any smoother and special thanks goes out to Lance Wright and everyone at Long & McQuade, John Meydam of B&J Music and everyone at Humber College.

Steve said: "It feels great to have one under our belt and tonight felt really good. It's nice to be out again doing clinics and meeting some wonderful people..."

Friday, June 2nd, 2006... Steve Gadd and the Zildjian Team (John DeChristopher, Vice President, Artist Relations & Event Marketing Worldwide, John King, Product Training Manager, Paul Francis, Research & Design/Quality Manager and Jerry Smith, Regional Sales Manager) arrived in Toronto on Friday, June 2nd, and after months of preparation, we're rearing to go for another successful tour.
