Zildjian is proud to announce that Tihda Vongkoth, a student at Southern Methodist University (Meadows School of the Arts), and a student of Douglas Howard and Kalman Cherry, is the winner of the 2007 Keroupe Zildjian Concert Percussion Scholarship. Tihda will receive a $4,000 scholarship toward her tuition at SMU, as well as an all expense paid trip to Zildjian's World Headquarters in Norwell, Massachusetts to tour the factory and select several orchestral cymbals presented free of charge. College undergraduate percussionists worldwide participated in the competition.
Zildjian's tremendous commitment and dedication to percussion education and student advancement is exemplified in this scholarship in memory of Keroupe Zildjian. Late in the 19th century in Constantinople, Turkey, Keroupe and company produced the classic K Zildjian cymbals that are coveted by many of today's orchestral players. The "K" Zildjian sound is legendary for its pristine and identifiable warm and expressive musical character. Today, these cymbals are played by some of the world's most renowned orchestras. Along with artists such as Angela Zator Nelson (Philadelphia Orchestra) and Tom Freer (Cleveland Orchestra), this coveted K Zildjian sound has been recreated by the Zildjian Sound Lab in the new K Constantinople and K Constantinople Vintage Orchestral line of cymbals.
