It is hard to believe that Rick Marotta never hit a drum before the age of 19. Considered one of the great drummers of the past 30 years, Rick may be best known for
his remarkable precision and practical style. While music of the 1970s was characterized by flashy drum work, Rick chose a simple yet distinctive style. Rick gained increased appeal with an approach that could be summed up by the philosophy that the more notes he heard other drummers play, the more inspired he was to play fewer notes.
This stylistic approach made Rick popular with a broad range of artists, including Aretha Franklin, Carly Simon, Steely Dan, James Taylor, Paul Simon, John Lennon, Hall & Oates, Stevie Nicks, Wynonna, Roy Orbison, Todd Rundgren, Roberta Flack, Peter Frampton, Quincy Jones, Jackson Browne, Waylon Jennings, Randy Newman, Kenny G. and Crosby, Stills & Nash.
Rick is also known for his ability to get the most out of Yamaha's small Hipgig drum set. Lending his name to this "uniquely compact and portable professional-level HipGig drum kit", Rick continues to surprise audiences with its incredible sound.
Over time, Rick has diversified his resume, spending time as a producer, music director and a television and film composer. Most recently, Rick lent his skills in the creation of scores for such popular television programs as Everybody Loves Raymond, Imagine That, and Yes, Dear.
